Q’orianka Kilcher as Katniss Everdeen
^^^^ But really tho
SO GLAD SOMEONE SAID IT
How the fuck is she supposed to be this? She’s olive skinned, the description given to Mediterranean people like Italians or Greeks. You know whites. For fucks sake her mother and sister are blond and blue eyed. You can argue barely that she might be half white but you can’t fucking say this is a case of white washing or anything.
Jesus fuck you people aren’t any better than the ones who thought Rue was white despite her being described as having dark brown skin.
Prim and her mom were the exception, not the rule. Everyone in District 12 was described as looking like Katniss and Gale, olive skinned, black hair, and grey eyes. Fun thing is, Q’orianka Kilcher is half-white, her mother is Swiss-German and, guess what, blonde haired and blue eyed:
So weird how you could have googled that but didn’t.
And because you decided to go there and bring up the controversy about Rue, let’s go there. We are at a place in our culture where white representation is so over-saturated that all characters are assumed to be white unless described otherwise. What we learned from Rue-gate is that even characters explicitly described as dark skinned are envisioned by readers (white readers namely) as white. That’s racism. That’s erasure. People reading Katniss as a woman of color could not be more opposite.
The reading of Katniss as a woman of color is entirely legitimate, given the way she was described. You hijacking this post to air your unfounded frustrations, however, is petty and arrogant. This is a make-believe casting for a role that Q’orianka Kilcher would not have even been able to audition for. Let that sink in. Is your problem that people had a different reading of a fictional character from yours, or is your problem that you can’t stand the idea that so many people are responding to the mere idea of a woman of color being in this role?

The sun had not risen when she came in sight of the prince’s palace, and approached the beautiful marble steps, but the moon shone clear and bright. Then the little mermaid drank the magic draught, and it seemed as if a two-edged sword went through her delicate body: she fell into a swoon, and lay like one dead. When the sun arose and shone over the sea, she recovered, and felt a sharp pain; but just before her stood the handsome young prince… The prince asked her who she was, and where she came from, and she looked at him mildly and sorrowfully with her deep blue eyes; but she could not speak… [x]

Then Beauty began to cry, and wandered sadly back to her own room. But she soon found that she was very sleepy, and as she had nothing better to do she lay down and instantly fell asleep. And then she dreamed that she was walking by a brook bordered with trees, and lamenting her sad fate, when a young prince, handsomer than anyone she had ever seen, and with a voice that went straight to her heart, came and said to her, “Ah, Beauty! you are not so unfortunate as you suppose. Here you will be rewarded for all you have suffered elsewhere. Your every wish shall be gratified. Only try to find me out, no matter how I may be disguised, as I love you dearly, and in making me happy you will find your own happiness. Be as true-hearted as you are beautiful, and we shall have nothing left to wish for.” [x]
